Family Ski Holidays 2017-10-14T10:47:08+00:00

So, you’re thinking of travelling as a Family?

Redpoint Family Ski Holidays have evolved over the last 22 years to suit the needs of our many returning customers. Take a look at the information below – we’re sure that you’ll find something to suit you.

Who Goes on a Family Ski Holiday?

Redpoint Family Ski Holidays can be tailored to suit the needs of your family group.

Whether you are a family of four or five, a group of families or a single parent, coming with friends and grandparents, or just with your kids, let us know your preferences and we’ll do our best to offer your preferred rooming and facilities.  Child discounts apply when children share a family suite with parents, so please let us know your child ages so that we can offer you the best variations for your particular needs.

Although our holidays are focused on getting you up and skiing as a whole family, the resort is also a lovely place to stay for non-skiers, who can join skiing family members on the snow at lunch times, take part in after ski activities and explore the village and the valley.

Where do we ski?

Family Ski Lessons are usually held in our local ski ares of Spieljoch, Hochfugen and Hochzillertal from Monday – Friday.  Groups are split into Adult and Child ages as well as different levels of skier.  Wherever possible, adult and child lessons are at the same times, so that you can meet up with your children at lunch times as well as having a chance to ski together in the mornings before the lessons, or after skiing.  All instruction is in small English-speaking groups and exclusive to Redpoint guests, so it is a great way to meet other families and make friends with skiers of your age groups and levels.

Saturdays are left free for you to ski together with the family, or take a day off to explore and relax.  Sometimes an optional extra day of instruction can be arranged for the Saturday once in resort.

The local ski areas offer around 115km of skiing and have a good progression of blue, red and black slopes for learning and improving your skiing, as well as some great off-piste areas for expert skiers.  With over 500km of skiing in the valley included on your lift pass, you can also explore the other ares in the valley including Zell am Ziller, Mayrhofen and the Hintertux Glacier.

Where do we stay?

Stay in one of our carefully chosen Hotels or Apartments to suit your family group size and needs.  All are conveniently situated within 5 minutes walk of the gondola ski lift and the resort facilities and accommodation are all family – friendly.

The four star superior Garden Hotel Crystal offers a fabulous luxury ski and spa experience.  It has a swimming pool and a children’s play room, with friendly, attentive staff and a separate children’s buffet giving your child a choice of children’s meals, whilst you enjoy the gourmet five course evening meals from the adult menu.

The four star Hotel Waldfriede situated along the ski run back down to the village, also has a swimming pool, children’s play area and panoramic spa.  With fantastic views all along the valley from most parts of the hotel, the family rooms sleep up to 5 people.

The cosy four star Hotel Bruno has a relaxing lounge with open fireplace to have a drink or play a family board game before or after dinner.  Rooms sleep up to four people and there is a play area and a table tennis room.  Four course evening meals await upon your return from the slopes and a buffet breakfast is served in the mornings to start your day.

If you like to all stay together, sharing an apartment offers the flexibility to do your own thing, whether you like to cook together, eat out at one of the local restaurants or get a take-away.  Apartments sleep from 2 – 11 people.  As a group of families, you may choose to stay in neighboring apartments in the same chalet, taking one apartment per family.

There is more to do after skiing…

As well as skiing during the day, join in other family activities after skiing.  Whether it’s taking a sleigh ride, tobogganing, night skiing or the Austrian 9-pin bowling evening, there is plenty more fun to be had.  Go swimming in the fabulous village swimming pool complex, complete with indoor and outdoor heated pools, a separate swimming pool with wave machine and the longest slide in western Austria, as well as a separate shallow pool especially for infants.

Family Ski Holiday – Travel

Flights and Transfers are included in your family ski holiday package.  Our advertised package price is usually based on flying from London Heathrow to Munich, but it is possible to fly from other airports.  If you can’t see your preferred airport listed, then please contact us for a personalized quote and we’ll see what we can do.

Flights are usually to Munich airport (MUC), although we do sometimes quote flights to Innsbruck airport (INN) and may occasionally quote flights to Salzburg (SZG).  Transfer times from Munich are approx. 2 hours, from Innsbruck approx. 1 hour and from Salzburg approx. 2.5 hours.  Transfers are usually by minibus, with up to 8 people sharing the transfer, although very occasionally we do use a coach at times when a lot of people have booked the same flights.

If you prefer to make your own travel arrangements because you are travelling from overseas or for other reasons, let us know and we can tailor your package to suit your individual travel needs.

Family Ski Holiday – Ski Lessons

Family Ski Lessons are usually held in our local ski ares of Spieljoch, Hochfugen and Hochzillertal from Monday to Friday.

It is also possible to arrange snowboard lessons, although they will not necessarily fit together at the same times as the other family lessons.

Family Ski Holiday – Lift Passes and Hire

A 6-day “Super Zillertal” lift pass is usually included in the Family Ski Package for adults, youth and children, although this can be amended to suit your preferred number of days if different.  Children aged under 6 years old don’t pay for a lift pass.  Non-skiers can buy a lift pass for their journey, depending on which lift they use, once in resort.  Our Redpoint team is happy to advise and assist in buying additional lift passes in resort as required.

6 days of Equipment Hire can be included depending on your needs, age and skiing level.  One of the Redpoint Resort Team will assist and advise you at the ski hire shop upon arrival when you go to collect your equipment.  It is best to pre-book one of the standard options, but it will still be possible to amend or upgrade this once you try on equipment in the shop.

Choices of ski or snowboard fall into the categories of Bronze, Silver or Gold.  The Bronze skis are best suited to first-time skiers, as they are more forgiving when learning the very basics at slow speeds.  Silver skis will suit most intermediate skiers who ski mainly the blue and red runs.  The Gold ski category is ideal for those skiers who ski the black runs and more difficult terrain, or those who usually have their own equipment.  The VIP category is best chosen in the shop and provides specialist skis – this is something an advanced skier may choose to book as an upgrade on the day to suit the conditions.

Boots also come as Standard or Deluxe options, but the most important thing with the ski boot is making sure it fits you well, which can only be finalized once you are in the shop.  Our representatives can advise you once in resort.

Poles are included with the ski hire.  Helmets are automatically included with the children’s ski hire and it is also possible for adults to hire a helmet (if you don’t already have one).

Family Ski Holiday – Evening Activities

As well as skiing during the day, join in other family activities after skiing.  Whether it’s taking a sleigh ride, tobogganing, night skiing or the Austrian 9-pin bowling evening, there is plenty more fun to be had.  Go swimming in the fabulous village swimming pool complex, complete with indoor and outdoor heated pools, a separate swimming pool with wave machine and the longest slide in western Austria, as well as a separate shallow pool especially for infants.

Family Ski Holiday FAQ’s

Is it easy for skiers of different levels to meet up for lunch on the ski area? 2017-09-19T11:52:26+00:00

Spieljoch is very convenient for meeting up, with the gondola station coming up from the village providing a perfect central point.  For skiers learning to ski on the blue runs the gondola station is at the bottom of the blue slopes and the meeting point for their ski lessons.  For more advanced skiers, the red and black runs circulate back to the gondola making it easy to return to in time to meet friends or family without unnecessary travelling.  Non-skiers can come up the gondola to meet everybody for lunch, or to sit out in a deck chair on the sun terrace for drinks.  Groups of families with infants can bring their prams up to the top for the day and share the childcare by taking it in turns to go for a ski (or drop off the children at the Kindergarten for a few hours and ski together).  Hochfugen is a valley with all slopes leading down to the central area, making it easy to meet up in the middle.

What is there to do in the resort for non-skiers? 2017-09-19T11:26:52+00:00

Non-skiers can go up the gondola ski lift to the top of the mountain and take in the breathtaking views as well as joining skiing family members for lunch at a mountain restaurant on the slopes.  There are some lovely mountain walks to explore up on the mountain as well as forest walks starting from the village.  The village itself has several cafes, a number of shops, a small local museum as well as other tourist attractions, such as the dairy showcasing the local cheese-making and the butcher making traditional Austrian “Speck”.  There is a narrow-gauge railway running up the valley, making it easy to take a train trip to explore other villages in the valley.  Or go on an excursion to nearby Lake Achensee, the village of Rattenberg renowned for it’s Crystal, or visit Innsbruck the capital of the region.

What childcare facilities are available for infants? 2017-09-19T11:27:13+00:00

Each of our local ski areas has a ski Kindergarten that caters for children from 0 – 7 years old.  You can book your child in for a half day, a full day, or per hour with or without lunch included in whichever area you plan to ski that day.  The place has to be pre-booked at least one day beforehand, so let us know and we can reserve the first day for you before your arrival.  You can then make direct arrangements once in resort.

Which hotels have a swimming pool? 2017-09-16T18:53:18+00:00

The Garden Hotel Crystal and the Hotel Waldfriede both have swimming pools included at the hotels.  In addition to this, the resort has a fantastic swimming pool complex, which you can pay to use wherever you stay.

What time of day are the ski lessons and how long do they go for? 2017-09-16T18:53:28+00:00

Children’s group ski lessons are for 3 hours per day, a 1.5 hour lesson in the morning and a 1.5 hour lesson in the afternoon with a lunch break in between.  Groups are split into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels and are suitable for children aged from 6 – 12 years.  Adult group ski lessons are also in 1.5 hour sessions, with beginners taking 2 sessions per day and intermediate/advanced skiers taking one 1.5 hour session and having the rest of the day free to practise.  Teenagers can join the adult ski lessons, or where there are a few teenagers of a similar level, may have their own group.  Private lessons on a one-to-one basis with the instructor, or for 2 people sharing the instruction, usually run for 1.5 hours per session.  The lesson times are: 9.30 – 11.00, 11.00 – 12.30, 13.00 – 14.30, 14.30 – 16.00 and you will be allocated to your slots upon arrival, depending on your skier level.

What age do the children’s ski lessons start from? 2017-09-16T18:53:33+00:00

Children can usually cope with joining the group ski lessons from around the age that they start school, which is why we say the group lessons are for children aged 6 – 12 years.  Children who are 5 years old may also fit in the group and can try out the first day in the group to see whether it suits them.  Younger children, aged from 3 – 5 years usually get on best taking a one-to-one lesson with the instructor and a 1.5 hour private lesson per day is enough.   The instructor can then keep close to the child (as they tend to lose concentration quickly), keep them engaged and entertained and can stop for a break when the child needs it.

Do I need a Super Zillertal Lift Pass, or can I buy one for just the local ski area? 2017-09-19T11:28:13+00:00

Once you buy a lift pass for more than 2 days in a row, then there are no local-area pass options, so all skiers buy the “Super Zillertal” pass regardless of their skier level.
