Adaptive Ski Holidays 2017-10-14T23:37:55+00:00

So, you’re thinking of coming skiing with a disability?

The Redpoint Adaptive programme has evolved over the last 20 years to offer specialist ski instruction and equipment to our disabled customers, so that they can come skiing with their family, friends or carer. Take a look at the information below for inspiration and then let us know your preferences so that we can tailor your holiday to suit you.

Who Goes Adaptive Skiing?

The Redpoint Adaptive skiing programme provides specialist equipment and instruction to enable customers with a disability to come skiing with their family, friends or carer. Whether it is a physical or cognitive disability, our adaptive instructors employ a range of equipment and techniques to make skiing possible for many types of people.  Previous customers have included people with visual impairments, alzheimers, autism, stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, amputees and wheelchair users as well as many others.

Where do we ski?

Adaptive ski lessons take place in the ski areas of Spieljoch, Hochfugen and Hochzillertal, which have a variety of terrain to suit all levels of skier.  Most adaptive lessons are on a one-to-one basis with the instructor, although we can offer group lessons where appropriate. A typical week usually includes five days of instruction (from Monday to Friday), with 2 lessons of 1.5 hours per day and a lunch break in between, although we do sometimes amend the regular lesson plan to suit the individual needs of the person.

Where do we stay?

There are a several hotels and apartments to choose from. all based within a 5 minute walk of the gondola ski lift.  Where needed, minibus transportation to and from the ski lessons will be organized by your instructor and the Redpoint Team in resort.  Wheelchair accessible rooms are possible to book at the Hotel Bruno and also at the Garden Hotel Crystal, which also has an accessible swimming pool and spa.   There is also an accessible ground-floor self-catering apartment with wheel-in shower facilities.  Other accommodation requests, such as a walk-in shower, a room near the lift for easy access, quiet room, or a quiet corner to sit in the restaurant at meal times can be catered for.

Ski Together with your Family and Friends…

We don’t just organize Adaptive ski lessons, but organize ski holidays for everybody to enjoy together, which means that friends and family can learn to ski alongside the adaptive skier on the same holiday and share the experience.

Adaptive Ski Holiday – Travel

Flights and Transfers are usually included in your ski holiday package.  Our advertised package price is usually based on flying from London Heathrow to Munich, but it is possible to fly from other airports.  If you can’t see your preferred airport listed, then please contact us for a personalized quote and we’ll see what we can do.

Flights are usually to Munich airport (MUC), although we do sometimes quote flights to Innsbruck airport (INN) and may occasionally quote flights to Salzburg (SZG).  Transfer times from Munich are approx. 2 hours, from Innsbruck approx. 1 hour and from Salzburg approx. 2.5 hours.  Transfers are usually by minibus, with up to 8 people sharing the transfer, although very occasionally we do use a coach at times when a lot of people have booked the same flights.

Our regular minibus transfers are not adapted, so if you are a wheelchair user you will need to transfer into a regular seat for the journey to resort.  Please discuss this with us when making your booking so that we can allocate you to a transfer which is accessible for you.

If you prefer to make your own travel arrangements because you are driving or travelling from overseas or for other reasons, let us know and we can tailor your package to suit your individual travel needs.

Adaptive Ski Holiday – Ski Lessons

Adaptive ski lessons take place in the ski areas of Spieljoch, Hochfugen and Hochzillertal, which have a variety of terrain to suit all levels of skier.  Most adaptive lessons are on a one-to-one basis with the instructor, although we can offer group lessons where appropriate. Adaptive Ski Hoilday – Lift Passes and Hire

A 6-day “Super Zillertal” lift pass is usually included in your holiday package when staying for a week.  In some cases where you are using the sit-skis you may be eligible for a discounted pass depending on the disability and skiing method used.

Specialist Equipment Hire of a Biski, Monoski or other variations can be booked for the duration of your ski lessons, or in the event that you can ski it independently of the instructor, there may be the option to book it for your sole use for the duration of your stay.

Standard Equipment Hire can be included depending on your needs and skiing level.  One of the Redpoint Resort Team will assist and advise you at the ski hire shop upon arrival when you go to collect your equipment.  It is best to pre-book one of the standard options, but it will still be possible to amend or upgrade this once you try on equipment in the shop.

Choices of ski or snowboard fall into the categories of Bronze, Silver or Gold.  The Bronze skis are best suited to first-time skiers, as they are more forgiving when learning the very basics at slow speeds.  Silver skis will suit most intermediate skiers who ski mainly the blue and red runs.  The Gold ski category is ideal for those skiers who ski the black runs and more difficult terrain, or those who usually have their own equipment.  The VIP category is best chosen in the shop and provides specialist skis – this is something an advanced skier may choose to book as an upgrade on the day to suit the conditions.

Boots also come as Standard or Deluxe options, but the most important thing with the ski boot is making sure it fits you well, which can only be finalized once you are in the shop.  Our representatives can advise you once in resort.

Poles are included with the ski hire.  It is also possible to hire a helmet if you don’t already have one.

Adaptive Ski Holiday FAQ’s

We are a family group with children needing ski lessons as well as a disabled family member, is it possible to cater for all of us? 2017-09-17T12:17:59+00:00

Yes.

How accessible are the ski areas? 2017-09-17T12:05:54+00:00

The ski areas are amazing feats of engineering in mountainous terrain, but often they do not have very accessible facilities.  Skiers need to be prepared to be challenged to overcome problems with accessibility, such as a lack of accessible toilets and not having access to all areas of the restaurants and mountain huts. The Redpoint Team will do all they can to assist and advise, but often there simply aren’t great facilities and we just have to do the best we can to get by with what there is.  If you are particularly worried about accessibility, then please give us a call to talk through your needs and we can give you a better indication of what to expect.

I am a wheelchair user, which accommodation options would be suitable for me? 2017-09-17T11:55:17+00:00

Wheelchair accessible rooms are possible to book at the Hotel Bruno and also at the Garden Hotel Crystal, which also has an accessible swimming pool and spa.   There is also an accessible ground-floor self-catering apartment with wheel-in shower facilities.

Can a family member learn to assist me so that we can ski together independently? 2017-09-17T11:51:27+00:00

If you have a partner or family member who is of a suitable skier level to be able to join in with your lessons, they are welcome to come along and learn to assist you.  Please speak to your instructor on arrival in resort who will be able to advise on the suitability and what is possible to achieve.

Are the airport transfers accessible? 2017-09-17T11:44:49+00:00

Our airport transfers are usually by minibus and you will need to be able to transfer into a regular minibus seat for the duration of the journey, as there is no provision for staying seated in a wheelchair.

I have a disability, can I come on a ski holiday by myself? 2017-09-17T11:34:11+00:00

The Adaptive Ski Lessons include assistance from the instructor during the lesson times only.  At other times, the Redpoint Team is happy to assist by arranging transportation or helping with special requests, but because they have other duties and commitments to other guests, it is not possible for them to provide individual support.  If you need personal care, or assistance in finding your way around independently, you will need to bring a carer or friend with you.

Do I need a Super Zillertal Lift Pass, or can I buy one for just the local ski area? 2017-09-19T11:28:13+00:00

Once you buy a lift pass for more than 2 days in a row, then there are no local-area pass options, so all skiers buy the “Super Zillertal” pass regardless of their skier level.
